“Transnational Soundscapes. Youth cultures and the beginnings of world music in the long 1960s.”

“The paper explores resonances of transnational youth cultures, travel practices and their effects on popular culture from the late 1960s to the 1980s. The overland trip to India was a pivotal experience for many youngsters and young adults since the late 1950s. One of the central effects of these trips on popular culture was the creation of a transcultural soundscape in the 1970s which will in the 1980s be labeled as world music. The West-German musical collective Embryo and their overland trip to India in 1978-1979 will be analyzed as a case for the beginnings of a transcultural soundscape in the late 1960 and in the 1970s.”
