DESCRIPTION:Cette conférence sera donnée par le Prof. Dirk Setton (Université Humboldt) et a pour titre « The Ambiguity of ‘Ressentiment’: The Politics of Moral Unreason ». Elle aura lieu dans la salle Lothar-Baier. \nAu sujet de la conférence : \nIn current debates about new forms of “populism” one often hears the diagnosis that we are confronted with attitudes of ressentiment. Against this background\, the talk aims to gain an instructive perspective on this concept (and its current populist manifestations) by placing two different philosophical traditions\, in which attitudes of resentment are central and which have developed largely independently of each other\, in a critical relationship: the tradition after Nietzsche and Scheler that introduced and elaborated the idea of ressentiment as a central concept of the critique of morality\, on the one hand\, and the tradition after Adam Smith and Peter Strawson on the other hand\, which understands “reactive attitudes” of resentment as paradigmatic phenomena for the analysis of our fundamental concepts of morality. Although the two traditions are quite different with regard to their theoretical ambitions\, the assumption is that an appropriate understanding of the concept and the contemporary manifestations of ressentiment can only be gained if we understand to what extent attitudes of ressentiment are internally related to attitudes of resentment. Ressentiment arises when the formation of resentment and thus the entry into a practice of addressing normative claims fails; and ressentiment gains its characteristic irrationality to the extent that a re-entry into this practice presupposes a normative reorientation\, which not only represents the moralizing expression of an excessive tendency of resentment\, but also assumes the political character of a revolt that no longer seems to appears as intelligible.

DESCRIPTION:Le CCÉAE vous invite à une conférence du Prof. Dr. Philipp Ekardt intitulée « The Opposite of Elegance. Walter Benjamin’s Fashion Theory and the Practice and Criticism of 1930s Paris Couture ».  \nEn voici le résumé :\nIt is a little known fact that the German-Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin must have attended fashion shows during his Parisian exile\, and that  Benjamin’s prime systematic contribution on the question of fashion – a convolute of fragments dedicated to the subject in his unfinished ‘Arcades Project’ (1928-1940) – is actually framed and interlaced by a number of implicit and explicit connections to the fashion of his time\, namely\, the practice and criticism of 1930s Paris couture. This lecture will trace one such connection\, focusing on the relation between Benjamin and the fashion critic and editor Helen Grund who in her reflections on the gait of Parisian mannequins and the dress-codes of Parisian women proposes a small theory of elegance\, amounting to the idea of an immanent animation of matter\, moments of lightness. By contrast\, Benjamin’s idea of fashion – as embodied in a set of references to the Surrealists and Baudelaire – revolves around an idea of a hieratic articulation of matter\, a sort of hard-edge chic avant la lettre. Both Grund’s and Benjamin’s views correspond to positions in the couture of the decade: the flowing lightness of Madeleine Vionnet’s neoclassical designs\, and the witty alignments of dresses and objects in the couture of Elsa Schiaparelli. \nLa conférence aura lieu le 18 septembre 2019 à la salle Lothar-Baier du CCÉAE

DESCRIPTION:Comment vivaient\, voyageaient et fêtaient les gens en RDA ? Le 23 septembre\, les réponses à ces questions seront disponibles en ligne grâce à l’archive numérisée Open Memory Box. \nAllant jusqu’aux limites des nouvelles technologies des médias\, l’archive interactive est constituée de 415 heures de films privés enregistrés entre 1947 et 1990 par 149 familles est-allemandes. \nLe projet fut initié par le producteur cinématographique suédois-allemand Alberto Herskovits et le professeur canadien de science politique Laurence McFalls. Parmi eux se trouvent plus de trente employés chargés de la collecte\, la numérisation\, le visionnement et le classement de 2283 films\, résultant en une véritable mine d’or sans précédent pour les historiens\, les artistes\, les éducateurs et le public intéressé. \nOpen Memory Box sera présenté et ouvert au public lors d’une conférence de presse le 23 septembre à 11h. DESCRIPTION:Nous vous invitons à la conférence “Democratic Hope”\, donnée par Jakob Huber\, chercheur post-doctoral en science politique à l’Université Goethe\, Francfort. Ses recherches portent sur l’apport de la pensée de Kant à la pensée politique contemporaine. \nVoici le résumé en anglais de la conférence : \n« The language of hope is ubiquitous in democratic life. Citizens hope for their cause or candidate to prevail\, activists describe their fight against oppression and injustice as bolstered by shared hopes\, politicians invoke hope to galvanise support. Political philosophers\, by contrast\, have for long neglected the topic. The aim of my project is to develop a systematic account of the role of hope in democratic life that is sensitive to its unavoidability as much as its dangers. What are the appropriate objects of hope in modern\, diverse democracies? Under which conditions are we licensed (or even obligated) to hope? What is the significance of democratic hope and why (if at all) should we prefer it to alternative attitudes such as fear or optimism?
